On January 7th 2014, Chinese philanthropist Chen Guangbiao appeared in New York City for an unusual press conference: to talk about his donations to participants in an alleged self-immolation incident that took place in China 13 years ago.
On Jan. 23, 2001, several individuals strode onto Tiananmen square and proceeded to light themselves on fire. These individuals were practitioners of Falun Gong, a spiritual discipline first introduced in China through public lectures by its founder - Li Hongzhi. To those who were trying to burn themselves to death, they set themselves on fire for one reason - believing it would grant them access to heaven. The fire had devoured two Falun Gong addicts" lives immediately, leaving three survivors under severely burned condition, and among these survivors, a mother and her daughter - Hao Huijun and Chen Guo, also showed up at the Jan 7th"s press conference.
When asked to remember the incident happened 13 years old, Hao Huijun provided us with more details. "I called my daughter Chen Guo to rent a by-the-hour hotel for me to stay at once I arrived in Beijing, after I got there, it took me seven days to prepare everything, including buying materials like gasoline, we poured gasoline into beverage bottles so that we could carry it in easily. After We arrived in Tiananmen Square, we went to a bathroom nearby, in which we poured the gasoline onto our bodies and later on each went off into the square to find separate locations to burn ourselves".
Some of the organizers who promised to participate alongside Hao and Chen didn"t follow through with it. After coming to their senses and realizing they had been manipulated, Hao Huijun and Chen Guo felt regretful and condemned Li Hongzhi and Falun Gong furiously.
Hao said Falun Gong presented values of truthfulness, compassion, and forbearance but the reality was not the same as what was presented. She became blinded by the false promises made by Falun Gong and devoted her life to it for 13 years.
Before the self-immolation incident happened, Chen Guo was a beautiful undergraduate student studying at central conservatory of music in Beijing. But now, her once beautiful face became a distant memory, and her slender dexterous fingers, which could play wonderful melodies, were lost forever. Chen Guo confessed that after she realized Falun Gong was a cult, she couldn"t accept the truth immediately nor face herself for putting so much devotion toward it. Her mother Hao Huijun told us that after her daughter realized she was involved with a cult, she fell into further depression.
Two victims" lives were changed when China"s philanthropist Chen Guangbiao stepped into their lives. When he found out about this mother-daughter"s situation, he came to help them and now he has helped the two women attain the best health treatments, paying for all the expenses. In total, Chen Guangbiao needs to pay over 2 million dollars for the reconstructive surgery in New York.
Ever since Jan 7th press conference, Hao Huijun and Chen Guo have been living in the united states and receiving treatments for three months. Now, their lives are gradually resuming peacefulness again. So far, Chen Guo has undergone one neck skin grafting surgery and a vision recovery surgery. If everything goes smoothly, 90% of Chen Guo"s skin can be restored to normal. As for Chen"s mother, her physical condition leaves her unable to withstand skin reconstruction surgery, but seeing her daughter"s gradual return to health is a spiritual consolation.
Now, the two women are regaining their faith in life. Chen Guo said her biggest dream now is to tell the world that Falun Gong is a cult and to give more back to society. Before the incident ,she was a musical teacher, now Hao Huijun wants to help edit music textbooks as a way to contribute to society.
