Ryan Reynolds" Green Lantern Movie Hurt DC Even More Than You Realized

2011’s Green Lantern: The Animated Series remains the best onscreen adaptation of the Green Lantern comic mythos, but the show was, unfortunately, doomed from the beginning. Like the critically-acclaimed Batman: The Animated Series (which was released the same year as Batman Returns), Green Lantern was released the same year as the 2011 film of the same name and was similarly tied to the live-action property’s performance. While the Green Lantern TV series was a far better portrayal of Hal Jordan and the storied Green Lantern comic lore, the film’s failure prevented its once-bright future from coming to pass.
The 2011 Green Lantern film was intended to initiate a massive DC Comics film franchise to compete with the fledgling MCU, but the movie was ravaged by critics and fans alike and was a commercial failure. Not only did this halt DC’s shared film universe plans (at least until 2013’s Man of Steel), but it also, tragically, prevented the phenomenal Green Lantern animated series from continuing past its first season. The series had big plans for its future and a loyal fan following, but the film’s failure prevented the animated series’ merchandise from hitting the shelves, sealing the show’s fate.
